EMBASSY OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE SUDAN PRESS RELEASE ON THE SIGNING OF THE COMPREHENSIVE PEACE AGREEMENT IN THE SUDAN

On the 9th January 205, a historic Peace Accord was reached between the Sudan Government and the Sudan People's liberation Movement (SPLM) in Nairobi. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement covers all the eight previously signed protocols including, the wealth-sharing, power-sharing, security arrangements, administration of three disputed areas, the wealth-sharing, power-sharing, security arrangements, administration of three disputed areas, the permanent cease-fire and modalities of the implementation of the peace agreement. This is indeed a moment of victory and triumph for the Sudanese people and the African continent at large. It is a testimony of their ability to resolve conflicts peacefully and through dialogue. The Agreement ushers in a dawn of peaceful and prosperous country.

Sudan is proud that a conflict inherited since 1955 even before the country got its independence in 1956 is now over. The signing of the Agreement marks a watershed in the history of the Sudan as the peace partners pledge full commitment to the development and stability of the country on firm basis of unity in diversity. Coinciding with Sudan's 49th anniversary of emancipation from the colonial yoke, this major accomplishment would undoubtedly give independence its true meaning. Sudan is hopeful that the international community who celebrated the victory of the Sudanese people will join hands in the daunting challenges of rehabilitation and reconstruction. Special tribute is to be registered to the neighbours of Sudan under whose mediation the solution was facilitated. IGAD and the IGAD Partners' Forum deserve our commendation. The people and the Government of the Sudan are grateful for India's participation at ministerial level in the signing ceremony. Indeed, India's pledge of continuing support to the unity, sovereignty ad territorial integrity and prosperity of Sudan, is one of Sudan's greatest assets.
